Crown and Bridge Work

Having a bridge or crown placed: this is how it works

We regularly perform crown and bridge work to replace damaged, discoloured, or broken molars or teeth. This properly corrects the shape and position of your molar or tooth. Our specialised team manufactures high-quality crowns and bridges that are particularly long-lasting. These teeth are modelled after the shape and colour of your original teeth and cannot be distinguished from real teeth.

  • Particularly durable: our crowns and bridges last at least 10 years
  • Indistinguishable from real teeth or molars
  • The original shape, function and colour of your teeth remain intact
  • Your tooth or molar restored painlessly

Dental Crown

A crown is ideally suited for a damaged, broken, or discoloured tooth. It can be made of both porcelain and metal or just porcelain. The molar or tooth is first ground off, and then the crown is placed there with glue or cement.

Dental Bridge

If a molar or tooth is missing in your teeth, we can have the resulting space bridged. This is done by means of a bridge, which consists of several elements. This bridge is attached to the existing teeth or molars that are located next to the missing tooth or molar.

How much does it cost to have a crown or bridge placed?

The costs for placing crowns and bridges are determined by the following factors:

  • Which type of crown is used
  • The number of teeth and molars that need to be replaced
  • The type of material used
  • Whether a structure needs to be installed
  • The fees charged by the dental laboratory

The Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) sets the rates for placing crowns and bridges. The full cost overview can be found on our rates page.

This is how crowns and bridges are placed

Step 1: Preparation of your tooth or molar

During the first appointment, we prepare your molar or tooth. This creates enough space to place the bridge or crown. Because many people find this process unpleasant, you will first be given a local anaesthetic.

Step 2: Taking a dental impression

Immediately after preparing your molar or tooth, we make an impression of your teeth. The technical laboratory can manufacture the bridge or crown based on this impression. But we can also have your bridge or crown made using a 3D photo and design using CEREC technology.

Step 3: The bite registration

Thanks to the bite registration, we can accurately determine the position of the teeth of the upper and lower jaws. This helps us determine both the height of the bridge or crown and the shape of the chewing and cutting surface.

Step 4: Choosing the final color

In consultation with the dentist, you can choose the most suitable color for your bridge or crown. You will receive a color scheme for this. If the bridge or crown does not seem to match the color of your own teeth after placement, our dental technician can adjust the color.

Step 5: Placing the emergency provision

To protect the abraded molar or tooth, an emergency provision will be placed during the first appointment. This also makes waiting for the final bridge or crown a lot more pleasant for you.

Step 6: Placing of the crown or bridge

The emergency device will be removed once your final bridge or crown is ready to be placed. When the time comes, you will come back to us for the final appointment. Then the dentist will place your custom-made bridge or crown and secure it with cement.

Sometimes it is necessary to make a buildup first. This may be necessary if your own molar or tooth does not provide enough hold to securely attach the bridge or crown. The superstructure is glued into the root canal, after which we can properly secure the bridge or crown.

CEREC technology for Bridges and Crowns

To guarantee good tooth replacement, we use CEREC technology. First, the damaged molar or tooth is ground into the correct shape. If the molar or tooth is missing, the molars and teeth on either side of the space are ground. We then make a scan of your mouth to create an exact representation of your teeth. A plaster cast is then not necessary.

The 3D scan is loaded directly onto the computer. The current situation, the treatment plan and the color of the crown and bridge will then be discussed with you and the end result will be digitally visualised so that you know in advance what the end result will look like. The material for the bridge or crown is then ground into the desired shape by a milling machine in 15 minutes. The crown or bridge is placed directly in your mouth.

Placing a crown on an implant

In some cases, an implant is placed first. This may be necessary if a molar or tooth is missing, or if the molar or tooth is severely damaged. The implant, which looks like a small screw and is made of body-friendly material, is then the base on which the bridge or crown can be placed. This is followed by the standard process described earlier. The bone will eventually grow attached to the implant. When CEREC Technology is used, it is not possible to place a crown on an implant.

Crowns and bridges: the most important questions and answers at a glance

From which materials are crowns and bridges made?

Crowns and bridges from zirconium
Zirconium crowns and bridges have a ceramic base and are covered with a thin layer of porcelain. Although free of metal, these crowns and bridges are very resistant and naturally adhere to the gums. This reduces the risk of inflammation of the gums.

Crowns and Bridges from porcelain
Thanks to the tooth-coloured material, a porcelain bridge or crown looks like a real tooth or molar. This is why porcelain is commonly chosen. Thanks to the latest technologies, you don’t have to worry that a porcelain bridge or crown will break easily. When it comes to porcelain, you can choose from the brands E-max and Feldspar.

Crowns and Bridges from metal-porcelain
The core of these crowns and bridges consists of metal. This core is covered with a layer of porcelain that matches the color of your teeth, so that your crown or bridge does not stand out.

Crowns and bridges from gold

What types of bridges are there?

Traditional Bridge
The traditonal bridge is placed on either side of the open space.

Free-ending bridge
This type of bridge is attached to one side of the missing molar or tooth.

Etsbrug
An Etsbrug is placed if some front teeth are missing and the teeth or molars next to those missing front teeth are still completely intact. It is not necessary to grind these adjacent teeth, instead we attach the bridge to the back of these teeth.

Should I expect pain after the treatment?

After the bridge or crown is placed, you may notice some sensitivity in the treatment area. Some post-operative pain may occur, but in most cases it disappears after about 7 days. If you experience after-pain for a longer period of time, we advise you to contact us.

Does my bridge or crown need a specific form of maintenance?

We recommend that anyone with a crown or bridge maintain good oral hygiene to maintain oral health. It is best to clean the gums around the bridge or crown with a soft toothbrush. Do this carefully and with attention. The daily use of brushes, toothpicks or dental floss is also highly recommended. Our dental hygienist can provide you with the best tips and advice.

What is the lifespan of a bridge or crown?

Thanks to the durable materials used for our crowns and bridges, you are assured that your bridge or crown will last at least 10 years. With excellent oral hygiene this can be even longer.
