How will my dentures be fitted?

Step 1: the first jaw impression

We immediately make an initial jaw impression to ensure that your new dentures fit perfectly. We fill a standard impression tray with material that hardens in your mouth, ensuring an exact impression of your teeth.

Step 2: the second consultation: two additional jaw impressions

The last two jaw impressions are made during the second consultation. We can ensure that the new impressions are more accurate because we have already made the first impression during the previous consultation. This way, we can be sure that the dentures are completely shaped to your jaw.

Step 3: get your bite recorded

For well-fitting and comfortable dentures, it is important that the position of your jaws and your bite are recorded exactly. We want to take the natural function of your jaw joints and current bite into account. During the consultation we also record the shape, position and color of your teeth in the denture.

Step 4: Try on the trial dentures

The teeth and molars have now been placed in the dentures and you can try them on. If necessary, the final adjustments can still be made. The position, color and shape of the teeth can also be adjusted.

Step 5: Your dentures are placed!

When you come in for the fifth and final consultation, your dentures will be ready for use. If any teeth still need to be extracted, this will be done during this consultation. You do not have to leave the practice with missing teeth: the dentures will be placed immediately.

Afterwards: take some time to get used to them and, above all, take good care of them

In order to get used to any pressure points as quickly as possible, it is wise not to remove your teeth from your mouth for the foreseeable future. In addition, it is recommended to only consume soft food in the first few days. Once you are completely used to your dentures, you can gradually increase your intake of harder foods. Please note: please do not bite hard foods (such as apples) with your dentures. Instead, it is better to cut the food into smaller pieces.

The best way to clean your dentures

Dentures also need to be cleaned thoroughly twice a day. In that respect it is no different from your own teeth. To remove food residues, you can brush the dentures with a denture brush and water or with a special denture paste. Don’t give gum disease a chance: clean your mouth every day. You can place your dentures in a container with special cleaning agent a maximum of once a week. It is best to do this before going to sleep.

What you absolutely need to know about dentures

Does the fitting of dentures hurt?
No, the moment we place the dentures in your mouth it does not hurt. We also provide local anaesthesia if we need to extract teeth or molars shortly beforehand. This reduces any pain to a minimum. On the first day you may experience some pressure pain while wearing your dentures.

Will my health insurer reimburse me for the cost of dentures?

Are dentures prone to discolouration?
A prosthesis can discolour if you regularly consume nicotine, coffee, tea or wine. By consuming as little of these products as possible and by keeping your dentures clean, you can prevent discolouration as much as possible.

I have dentures. Do I still have to go to the dental practice for a regular check-up?
People with dentures do not need to visit the dentist as often as people who still have their own teeth. Still, the advice is to schedule regular dental checkups even with dentures. Why? Your jaw may start to deform imperceptibly over the years. Dentures, on the other hand, do not deform. Over time, this can cause your dentures to not fit your jaw as well or even cause pain in your mouth. To prevent such discomfort, we recommend that you come in for a checkup at least once every two years. Of course, should you experience discomfort or complaints sooner, it is wise to schedule an appointment right away.

Can I eat and drink everything with my dentures?
With your dentures, you can eat everything. However, it is wise to cut hard foods into smaller pieces before eating them. This contributes to the longevity of your dentures.

How do I clean my dentures as best as possible?
After each meal, you should brush your dentures with a denture brush and water. Clean your dentures daily with a special denture cleanser and do not put the dentures in the cleanser overnight more often than once a week. You should also keep your jaws, palate and the inside of your mouth clean. Care should be taken when rinsing the dentures: the material can make them slippery and slip out of your hands.

How many years do dentures last?
After about five to eight years, it may be time to have your dentures replaced. You can make your dentures last as long as possible by cleaning them regularly and properly. Also, visit your dentist occasionally for a mid-term checkup.

Yes, you are welcome to register at our practice. It’s not necessary to contact your current dentist. We ask you to complete the registration form for new clients online and to submit it. Once we receive the completed form, we will contact you.
